Laguna Duo: A Designer’s Take on Versatile Sans Serif Branding

I was staring at a blank Figma board, trying to nail the visual identity for a new artisanal skincare brand. The brief was simple but tricky: clean, modern, yet warm and approachable. I needed something that felt premium without being cold, and distinctive enough to stand out in a saturated market. That’s when I pulled up Laguna Duo. It wasn’t just another sans serif font; it was a duo, and that distinction changed everything about how I approached the layout.

If you’re a graphic designer tired of using the same ubiquitous typefaces for every client project, Laguna Duo offers a refreshing alternative. It’s a gorgeous new font duo that packs a punch, designed specifically for standing out from the crowd. In this post, I’ll walk you through how I used Laguna Duo in a real branding scenario, exploring its versatility, pairing potential, and why it might be the perfect addition to your design assets library.

The First Impression: More Than Just a Typeface

When you first download a premium font, you usually skim through the weights and check the kerning. With Laguna Duo, however, the hook is immediate. As the name suggests, it comes as a pair. You have the regular font, which is crisp and highly legible, and its ‘shadow’ version, which adds a subtle, stylized depth. This isn’t just a bold or italic variant; it’s a distinct character set that allows for creative contrast within the same family.

In my initial mockups, I placed the regular version on the logo lockup. It felt solid and reliable. But when I switched to the shadow version for the tagline, the entire composition shifted. The shadow style added a tactile quality, almost like embossed lettering, without relying on complex vector effects. For a skincare brand, this subtlety was key—it suggested texture and ingredients without cluttering the minimalist aesthetic.

Building a Cohesive Brand Identity

One of the biggest challenges in brand identity work is maintaining consistency while keeping things interesting. Laguna Duo solved this by allowing me to use contrasting colors to help differentiate elements. I used the regular weight in a deep charcoal for body copy and navigation headers, ensuring high readability. Then, I applied the shadow version in a soft sage green for primary headlines and call-to-action buttons.

This technique worked beautifully across various touchpoints:

By treating the two versions as complementary rather than identical, I created a dynamic system that felt cohesive yet varied. This is particularly useful for entrepreneurs and small business owners who need their marketing materials to look professional and polished without hiring a full-time art director.

Font Pairing and Visual Hierarchy

While Laguna Duo is strong enough to stand alone, it also plays well with others. In typography, font pairing is an art form, and Laguna Duo’s modern sans serif structure makes it surprisingly adaptable. I tested it alongside a classic serif font for editorial-style content, such as blog headers or "About Us" pages. The contrast between the structured, geometric lines of Laguna and the organic curves of a serif created a sophisticated balance.

However, Laguna Duo shines brightest when used as a display font or headline font. Its unique shadow feature is best utilized in larger sizes where the detail can be appreciated. Using it for long-form paragraphs would likely fatigue the reader, so I reserved it for titles, subheads, and accent text. This strategic use enhances visual hierarchy, guiding the audience’s eye naturally through the content.

For web design, this distinction is crucial. Homepage hero sections benefit immensely from the impact of the shadow version, creating an immediate emotional connection with the visitor. Meanwhile, the regular version ensures that navigation menus and footer information remain accessible and easy to scan.

Practical Applications Beyond Digital

Design doesn’t stop at the screen. One of the most rewarding parts of testing Laguna Duo was seeing how it translated to physical materials. I printed some mock business cards and product stickers to see how the ink interacted with the paper stock.

On a matte cardstock, the shadow version took on a slightly raised appearance due to the way the light hit the thicker ink coverage. It gave the business card a tactile luxury feel that digital screens can’t replicate. Similarly, on product packaging, whether it was a cosmetic jar or a coffee bag, the font held up well. It didn’t get lost in the background noise of other graphics. Instead, it anchored the design, providing a sense of stability and professionalism.

This versatility makes Laguna Duo an excellent choice for printed marketing materials like flyers, posters, and brochures. Whether you are designing for a local restaurant, a creative studio, or a handmade shop, the font’s ability to convey both modernity and warmth is invaluable.

Technical Considerations and Licensing

Before committing to any typeface for a commercial project, it’s essential to check the technical details. Laguna Duo comes in multiple styles, which gives designers flexibility in building a comprehensive typeface system. When reviewing the file package, I noted the inclusion of standard weights, which covered most needs for both print and digital media.

It’s also worth checking for multilingual support if your brand operates internationally. While I focused on English for this case study, many modern sans serif fonts now include extended Latin character sets. If your project requires specific glyphs or ligatures, verify that these are included in the font files. Additionally, always review the commercial font licensing terms. Understanding what you can and cannot do with the font—such as embedding it in apps or using it on merchandise—is critical to avoiding legal issues down the line.

Testing Before Committing

My advice to fellow designers is to never skip the testing phase. Even though Laguna Duo looked promising in my initial drafts, I spent time setting up a mini brand board. I placed the font on different backgrounds, adjusted tracking and leading, and tested it in various sizes. This process revealed that the shadow version required slightly more breathing room than the regular weight to maintain its clarity.

By tweaking these details early on, I ensured that the final brand assets were polished and ready for production. This step is often overlooked but is vital for achieving a high-end look. It transforms a good design into a great one.

Why Laguna Duo Fits Modern Creative Work

In a world where attention spans are short, your typography needs to grab attention instantly. Laguna Duo does exactly that. It’s not just a functional tool; it’s a creative partner. Its dual nature allows for endless combinations, making it suitable for a wide range of industries, from tech startups to boutique hotels.

Whether you are working on editorial design, crafting social media templates, or developing a full brand identity, Laguna Duo offers the reliability of a sans serif with the flair of a custom display font. It helps brands communicate their personality clearly and effectively, ensuring that they don’t just blend in—they stand out.

As I wrapped up the skincare brand project, I realized that Laguna Duo had done more than just provide letters; it provided direction. It helped me make decisions about color, spacing, and emphasis. For any designer looking to add a versatile, stylish, and professional option to their toolkit, Laguna Duo is definitely worth exploring. It’s a testament to how the right creative font can elevate a project from ordinary to extraordinary.
